Wings for Life World Run 2026: Why Every Movement Matters

There are runs where the focus is on personal bests. On pace, rankings, and records. And then there is the Wings for Life World Run – a run where something much bigger matters in the end: coming together through movement to support spinal cord research.

The Wings for Life World Run is not a traditional run with a fixed finish line. Instead, a so-called Catcher Car follows the participants and gradually catches them. This means that everyone has their own distance, their own pace, and their own moment when the run ends. The best part: 100% of entry fees and donations go toward spinal cord research

The Wings for Life World Run 2026 will take place on May 10, 2026. Sign up and take part now.

One person for whom this run has a very special significance is Angelino Zeller - Austrian paraclimbing world champion and gloryfy athlete.

Angelino Zeller: When One Moment Changes Everything

There are moments in life that turn everything upside down. For Angelino Zeller, that moment was a 20-meter fall. A paragliding flight that suddenly ended when the canopy collapsed. An impact. Silence. And a thought that became etched in his memory:

“I realized that I couldn’t stand up – and immediately knew that it was going to be something serious.” - Angelino Zeller

The young man from Graz has been in a wheelchair ever since. But what many would have seen as the end became the most radical new beginning of his life. His story is not a classic athlete’s story of setback, training, and victory. It is much more human. It is about focus. About small steps forward. About movement. About finding direction again after a life-changing experience.

"After the accident, it helped me a lot to find joy in the small things again. Above all, our thoughts and personal focus have a strong impact during times like these. Because I am a very positive person, thank God I never fell into a “pit” after my accident. Movement is generally very important for people, but sports can be especially helpful after a life-changing event." - Angelino Zeller

Today – jumping ahead to 2026 – Angelino Zeller is a four-time paraclimbing world champion, a multiple World Cup winner, and one of the most inspiring athletes in the international climbing scene. Not because his journey was easy, but because he found a new direction after this turning point.

"Sport has always played a very important role in my life, and after my accident I tried many different sports. Through an inclusive climbing event, I returned to a climbing gym and gave climbing a try – in my case, using only my upper body. That was more or less the beginning of my further climbing career." - Angelino Zeller

That is precisely why every start at the Wings for Life World Run is so valuable: It gets people moving, raises awareness of spinal cord research, and supports the hope of a cure.

WFL Run: A Run Everyone Can Take Part In

The Wings for Life World Run is intentionally open to everyone. It is not about who is “athletic enough.” Runners, walkers, wheelchair users, people with strollers, or anyone who simply wants to move for a good cause can take part. In addition to Flagship Runs, there is also the option of starting via the app from any location.

Angelino describes this aspect as particularly important: "Absolutely everyone can take part in the Wings for Life World Run – regardless of age, pace, or method of movement."

For him, this is one of the reasons why the run is so special.

If you are still unsure whether you should take part, that is exactly what the Wings for Life World Run is about. Everyone starts at their own pace, every distance counts, and every step supports spinal cord research.

Why Angelino Takes Part Every Year

For Angelino, the Wings for Life World Run has long been much more than a date on the sports calendar.

After taking part for the first time, I was so inspired by the atmosphere and the motivation of the people that it became a must-attend event for me. It is hard to explain because you get swept up in the atmosphere. You have to experience it.- Angelino Zeller

In 2026, Angelino will once again take part in the Flagship Run in Vienna. He is especially looking forward to seeing his fellow athletes again, the atmosphere on site, and the new route.

This makes the run not only a sporting event, but also a meeting place for people who want to move, motivate one another, and support something together.

Unbreakable Mindset: What Really Drives You

Even world champions have difficult days. Angelino does not pretend that motivation is always easy to find. His strategy is down-to-earth:

"When things get tough, I look back at my progress and feel grateful for everything I have already achieved. I hold on to my goals and try to get the best out of myself."

You do not have to be maximally motivated every day. Sometimes it is enough to take the next step and remember that progress rarely happens all at once.

Conclusion: It Does Not Matter How Far You Go. What Matters Is That You Start.

The Wings for Life World Run is more than a running event. It is a global symbol of research, hope, solidarity, and movement.

Angelino Zeller shows what these ideas can mean: a person who, after a profound turning point, found new joy, new goals, and a new passion for sport.
